1. Data sources & benchmarks
Salary figures come from the U.S. Department of Education’s College Scorecard (field-of-study median earnings, public domain) and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) occupational employment data. Cost figures come from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES IPEDS) published averages and The College Board's Annual Trends in College Pricing. All figures reflect national medians or averages as of 2025.

2. Counting the cost
Total degree cost is constructed year by year, not multiplied blindly, so multi-year aid packages and changing tuition structures are accurately accommodated. For each academic year:
cost per year = tuition + living costs − scholarships & grants Any year that computes negative is clamped to $0 (grants do not provide negative cost). When selecting living at home, room and board drops out of each year. The community college 2+2 path uses community college tuition (approximately $3,800/yr from NCES) for years one and two, followed by the university rate for years three and four.
Family cash contributions are counted toward true educational cost — because they represent real out-of-pocket capital — but they are deducted before establishing the loan balance, accruing zero interest. Only the unfunded remainder is financed.

3. The loan payment
Monthly payments use the standard amortization formula applied by federal and private lenders:
payment = P · [r(1+r)ⁿ] / [(1+r)ⁿ − 1]
P = amount borrowed r = annual rate ÷ 12 (monthly)
n = term in months (r = 0 → payment = P / n) Total interest equals payment × n − P. The rate slider spans 3–12%, covering federal Direct Loan ranges through private underwriting; repayment options span 10, 15, 20, and 25 years.
4. Debt-to-income ratio & verdicts
Our headline verdict is governed by DTI: your monthly loan payment divided by your field's median gross monthly salary. This ratio is the primary benchmark utilized by financial aid counselors and mortgage underwriters.

The 8% and 12% thresholds reflect consensus financial aid recommendations to keep student debt obligations under 10–12% of gross earnings. For zero-debt scenarios, the verdict transitions to out-of-pocket payback velocity (recovery within 4 years indicates a strong investment).

The ROI multiple calculates how many dollars of incremental lifetime earnings the degree yields for every dollar of net investment. We project 10 years of earnings starting at the early-career median and advancing smoothly toward mid-career levels, measured against a high school graduate baseline earning $38,000 (median, BLS), indexing at 2% annual growth.

Total Net Investment = (Cost of Attendance − Scholarships) + Total Loan Interest Paid

6. Methodology comparison: Scorecard vs. Bloomberg

- Career growth trajectory. We project a steady progression from early- to mid-career earnings. Career transitions and leaves of absence are not modeled.
- Standard amortization. Income-driven repayment plans and Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) are not included in base calculations.
- The HS-grad baseline ($38,000) is a national median including workers of all experience levels.
- Post-graduation living expenses are benchmarked at $24,000/yr with a 22% effective tax rate in the reality check budget preview.
