About CollegeROICalc & Our College ROI Mission
CollegeROICalc exists for one simple reason: "Is this degree worth it?" deserves an objective number, not marketing spin. Families making six-figure education investments are routinely handed glossy brochures, commercial prestige rankings, and subjective advice — when evaluating college roi is fundamentally an empirical comparison: the all-in cost of the credential versus the median salary it reliably delivers.
We built an open calculator to make that comparison transparent. We pull official median salaries by field of study from the U.S. Department of Education’s College Scorecard and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, paired with standard lender amortization mathematics. Every formula, source, and assumption is published openly on our methodology page — so students and parents can independently verify the numbers instead of relying on a black box.
Evaluating ROI colleges vs. major choice
Conventional rankings often conflate brand selectivity with student return on investment. In practice, the best roi colleges are frequently public research flagships and polytechnic universities offering affordable in-state tuition and strong corporate recruiting pipelines. Rather than assuming certain elite campuses are the only viable roi colleges, our tools prove that choosing the right field of study and minimizing student borrowing has a far greater impact on financial solvency than a school's marketing prestige.
Furthermore, evaluating college recruitment roi means understanding how on-campus career fairs, alumni networks, and regional industry partnerships convert into high-quality starting salaries without requiring unsustainable private debt.
What we deliberately did differently
- Medians, not averages. Average salaries flatter the lucky few; the median describes the person in the middle.
- Debt-to-income first. The verdict hinges on the share of your salary the loan payment eats — the same yardstick lenders use — not on vague "value of education" talk.
- Fixes, not lectures. A bad verdict always comes with the nearest lever: community college 2+2, living at home, a different term. Cutting the price is usually easier than cutting the major.
- No sign-up, no email wall, no dark patterns. The calculator is the product, and it’s free.
How we stay free
The site is supported by display advertising and affiliate links — when you see a "compare refinancing rates" or "find scholarships" link, we may earn a commission if you use it, at no cost to you. That never changes the math: affiliate partners have no influence on salaries, formulas, or verdicts, and the methodology is the same whether you click anything or not.
A word of honesty about the numbers
These are national medians, and you are not a median. Your internships, city, GPA, and hustle move your outcome around the middle by a lot. Use this tool to frame the decision — then pressure-test it with real quotes from real schools and real lenders. And when the math says "high risk," believe it enough to shop for a cheaper path, not a better feeling.
